Hello, darling deviants, and welcome back for another Spotlight Saturday. This week, we’re taking a little time to talk to dark fiction author Joel Harris about his work and experience with writing. Check out the interview below!
Hello and welcome! Can you start by telling my darling deviants a little about yourself? Who are you and what do you write?
My name is Joel Harris. I’ve been married for 27 years. We have 5 wonderful furry babies. We live In Kentucky.
As to what I write. I write whatever I feel like writing at that particular moment. I write what I like to read, and I write for myself first. I do this because if I do not like what I write then no one will either. I do not believe in limiting oneself to one genre. There are so many to choose from.
How did you get started writing? When did you first know you wanted to write books?
I was in Middle school when I first started writing and realized that I wanted to write. I took a class and was encouraged by the teacher.
Tell us about the last book you released. What was your favorite part of writing it? Least favorite?
The first book I released was The Crucifix Dagger. The most fun part of writing it was creating a whole world from nothing. The least was that I was manic most of the time and having trouble sleeping. I would do 15-hour writing stretches at a time. Forgetting to eat and drink, until I got sick.
What’s the best character name you’ve ever come up with?
Do you have a favorite character that you’ve written? How much are they like (or unlike) you?
My favorite character would be Talian. He is like me in the sense that things over time, for the better or worse, have changed him.
If you could have a tea party with three of your favorite authors, alive or dead, who would you invite?
Margaret Weis. Poe. H. P. Lovecraft.
What sort of themes in fiction catches your attention? Do you have any you avoid?
Love, Horror, Death, Erotica. I don’t like ones that have rape, or kids getting hurt without a good reason.
When you’re not busy writing, what do you read? Who are a few of your favorite authors?
I like Horror, Sci-Fi- Erotica, Poetry, Myth and Legends, Fantasy, Litrpg. I like D K Holmberg. Ron Ripley. The stuff that Black Library publishes. Too many to name really.
Give readers three reasons they’ll LOVE your book.
It keeps your attention. A Necromancer is the protagonist. A Servant of the Blad, (an assassin who worships a god of Murder) becomes a hero.
What’s one book you think everyone should read before they die?
1984. I would say it’s very relevant to our current situation.
What draws you to the darker themes in fiction?
my father worked in the prison system and would evaluate prisoners. He would tell me wonderful tales about what some of them told him.
What surprised you the most about becoming an author?
The fact that the mess in my head that somehow got on paper made sense, and that people liked it.
What’s next for you in publishing? Do you have an upcoming release or new series we should look for?
I am working on Book Two in the Shadows and Ash series, The Mirror of Bone and Blood. I have ideas for novellas that take place in the same world. Perhaps a few anthologies or short stories.
